What Is Keto, The Ketogenic Diet That Helps Burn Fat And What Risks Exist

Due to its popularity and effectiveness, the ketogenic diet has become the diet chosen by many people to lose weight.

Body weight remains one of the most common concerns for people and finding ways to reduce measurements is the pending task.

To achieve this, one of the current trends is the ketogenic diet, which is characterized by its high consumption of fats and zero carbohydrates.

Gustavo Cruz, 44, learned about the keto diet through an advertisement and decided to learn more about it. He was looking for a way to lose weight and exercise without getting injured.

“I decided to make it because I thought it was interesting,” she says. “I didn’t restrict myself but made them myself. By figuring out where the carbs were, they were foods I could do without .”

The name of the ketogenic diet comes from ketones or ketone bodies, which are produced when you eat few carbohydrates and only moderate amounts of protein.

“A ketogenic diet consists of a low carbohydrate and high-fat consumption,” explains Estefani Paola Ajuchán, nutritionist at Cenantra. “The goal is to produce ketosis in the body, which produces ketones, which is an alternative source of energy.”

The specialist mentions that carbohydrates usually occupy 55 percent of the human diet, while healthy fats can be between 50 to 60 percent.

“What we are going to achieve with a ketogenic diet is to burn fat because the main source of energy is ketones and not glucose,” he mentions.

The benefits

When entering that ketogenic state, one of the initial benefits is weight loss that does not involve counting calories, as Ajuchán points out, which may be more comfortable for some.

Cruz followed the diet for three months and lost 40 pounds. He is now in a rest period where he consumes carbohydrates but in smaller quantities.

“I’m fine, I’ve maintained my weight and I hope to do one or two more months next month to reach my ideal weight,” she adds. “I did notice that I was less hungry and had less anxiety about eating.”

n addition to weight loss, the ketogenic diet can be beneficial for people with diabetes who are not taking any medication or insulin, as it reduces glucose levels.

Cancer patients can also benefit from reducing sugars and having greater metabolic control.

Is there any risk?

Among the risks of following a ketogenic diet is the possibility of having metabolic disorders, which is why it is recommended that it not be a permanent diet but rather a temporary one, as Cruz did.

It is also not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women because the energy and nutrient consumption are different.
