Seven Symptoms That Can Help Detect Breast Cancer Early

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 40% of all cancer cases could be prevented by avoiding risk factors. Breast cancer is a disease that causes more than 458 thousand deaths worldwide each year and is the second cancer that causes the most deaths in Guatemala, after cervical cancer.

While it is true that information for the prevention and early detection of this cancer is accessible to most women, it is important to remember its symptoms, which if detected in time can be significant for a woman’s life expectancy:

  • Swelling of all or part of the breast (although no definite lump can be felt).
  • Skin irritation or dimpling (sometimes resembling the peel of an orange).
  • Pain in the breast or nipple.
  • Retraction (contraction) of the nipples.
  • Redness, peeling, or thickening of the skin on the breast or nipple.
  • Nipple discharge other than breast milk.
  • Lumps or swelling around the armpits or collarbone

Experts explain that sometimes breast cancer can spread to lymph nodes in the armpits or around the collarbone and cause a lump or swelling there, even before the original tumor in the breast is large enough to be felt.
