Why Does My Mouth Get Bitter?

There are various factors that cause the sensation of bitter mouth, ranging from mild illnesses to more severe ones.

Have you ever had a bitter taste in your mouth in the morning? Experts say that it is normal to wake up with this sensation when we wake up, which disappears when we brush our teeth.

However, if this does not disappear during brushing, it is important to pay attention to this symptom, as it could be an indication of an underlying disease.

Specialists say that this is a multifactorial condition. According to the Medical News Today website, the medical term to describe this condition is dysgeusia.

This is defined as an abnormal taste in the mouth that may be metallic, bitter, rancid, foul, or even salty taste for no apparent reason.

Why is my mouth bitter?

When people experience this, they usually go to a dentist, when in reality it may be due to another type of disease. Many patients confuse this symptom with oral conditions and it is generally a systemic disease, says dentist Kevin Chavez.

Chavez mentions that the problem of bitter mouth sensation is sometimes related to gastrointestinal problems such as gastritis, being one of the most common. He also comments that it can be due to liver problems since he had the case of a patient with this condition.

Dentist Julio López agrees that bitter mouth is a multifactorial condition, since the causes may be due to gum problems, or other types of situations such as medication use or systemic conditions.

What other diseases are related to bitter mouth sensation?

According to Lopez, this problem may be a sign of gum problems such as gingivitis or periodontitis. However, if a dentist rules out these types of conditions, he or she will immediately refer the patient to another specialist, as it may be a systemic disease.

A relevant fact is that patients with diabetes present changes in their breath. Although it is not a bitter taste as such, Lopez mentions that it is a smell similar to that of an apple, so it is important to take this factor into account in case you notice this symptom and go to the doctor as soon as possible.
