What causes a myocardial infarction?

According to the specialized site MayoClinic, a heart attack is also known as a myocardial infarction and occurs when blood flow to the heart is blocked or severely reduced.

According to the specialized site, the obstruction is usually due to an accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the heart arteries (coronary arteries).

Fatty deposits containing cholesterol are called plaques and the process of plaque buildup is called atherosclerosis.

MayoClinic says that sometimes a plaque can break off and form a clot that blocks blood flow. Additionally, the interruption of blood flow can damage or destroy part of the heart muscle.

How a myocardial infarction is detected

According to MayoClinic, symptoms of a heart attack vary, with some people experiencing mild symptoms, others experiencing severe symptoms, and others experiencing no symptoms at all.

These are common symptoms of a heart attack:

  • Chest pain that may feel like pressure, squeezing, pain, or a squeezing or aching sensation.
  • Pain or discomfort that spreads to the shoulder, arm, back, neck, jaw, teeth, or sometimes to the upper abdomen.
  • Heartburn or indigestion.
  • Sudden dizziness.
  • Cold sweat.
  • Fatigue.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Nausea.

According to the Mayo Clinic, some heart attacks or infarctions happen suddenly, but many people have warning signs and symptoms hours, days, or weeks before.

The specialized site recommends that, if a myocardial infarction or heart attack occurs, it is necessary to receive treatment immediately to avoid death and one should call local emergency services and/or contact the family doctor.
