Although there is controversy regarding whether eggs are harmful or not to health, health experts mention that this food is a source of protein and other nutrients.
It is also a product that is frequently consumed in several Guatemalan homes, either to prepare for breakfast or to make other recipes such as wraps, milanesas, and desserts, among others.
However, chicken eggs should be consumed in moderation and with care, selecting a fresh, quality product to avoid damage to health.
In this regard, it is vital to check the expiration date of this product and not eat it if we know that it has expired. However, there are other details to find out if the egg is bad or not.
How do you know if an egg is bad?
Experts from the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics say that there is no completely effective mechanism to know if an egg is spoiled.
This is because there are microbiological damages that cannot be seen with the naked eye. However, if the shell is intact and it is still within its best-before date, it should be of good quality, experts say.
There is also a simple home method that allows us to know if the egg is fresh, although it is always recommended to keep in mind what was mentioned above. These are the steps to follow:
- Fill a glass with water and place the egg inside the container.
- Observe what happens to the egg. If it sinks to the bottom of the glass and quickly settles down, it is fresh. However, if the food floats, this could indicate that it is spoiled. In this case, it is best not to eat it. According to several sources, old eggs lose certain internal liquids by evaporating through their porous shell, which is why they do not sink.
- Another possibility is that the egg sinks slowly and remains upright. In this case, it should be consumed immediately, as it is close to expiration.
In general, it is important to buy products that meet the quality conditions necessary for consumption and to check expiration dates. They must also be prepared and stored properly to prevent the spread of salmonella and other bacteria.
