Bags under the eyes and dark circles result from the fact that the skin around our eyes is more delicate and thinner than the rest of the face, as it does not have sebaceous glands, making it a very sensitive area to wrinkles and fluid retention.
Ángeles Girón, head of research at Nezeni Cosmetics, told Efe: “Bags and dark circles can occur over time due to multiple factors, such as lack of sleep, allergies, bad habits or an inadequate diet. The eye area looks tired, and swollen, as if you had a bad night’s sleep.”
The cosmetologist from the natural beauty portal “Alice in Beautyland”, Eva Raya, shares the same opinion, arguing that “the skin around the eyes is 5 to 10 times thinner than the rest of the facial oval.”
ALSO IN THE YOUNG
Maribel Yébenes, head of the beauty firm of the same name, explains that to know how to treat bags, you have to identify their type.
According to this specialist, there are three types: fat bags, the most complicated, and the only solution to eliminate them is usually through surgery.
Then there are the watery bags, which usually come from bad habits and fluid retention; and the mixed bags, which have a little fat and will have a greater or lesser amount of water.
This expert recommends observing these bags for a while to find out what type they are. She also indicates that the best time of day to observe these changes is in the morning.
Although aging is the main factor for its appearance, Ángeles Girón tells Efe that it can also occur in young people “during their studies or when they go out a lot. If you don’t sleep enough or have too much salt in your diet, it’s something you have to change. If it’s due to allergies, which cause swollen or tired eyes, you should continue with your medication and see how you can reduce your exposure to the allergens that trigger the reaction.”
“It is very important to sleep and eat well, stay hydrated enough, and use suitable cosmetics with collagen or glycerin for their high moisturizing effectiveness,” according to this specialist.
PRACTICAL TIPS
Nezeni offers a range of cosmetic solutions to reduce puffiness under the eyes, regardless of age or skin type.
- 1.- The firm recommends using a very moisturizing eye cream, preferably with a high concentration of humectants, such as glycerin or caprylic and capric triglycerides. These compounds combat dry skin.
- 2.- They also indicate that it is important to introduce collagen into daily care routines, a protein that provides structure and promotes elasticity in the body, and which represents a large percentage of the content of our skin.
- 3.- She also recommends using chairlift, a sugar extracted from quinoa seeds and which, according to specialists, has great properties for the dermis. It is an active ingredient that reduces the appearance of expression lines and wrinkles, producing a lifting effect.
- 4.- These specialists from this laboratory also recommend apple stem cells, another natural extract with identical results to the chairlift, based on stem cells from the sour Swiss apple rottweiler spätlauber.
- 5.- They point out the need to refresh tired eyes with allantoin, “which acts as an emollient preventing dryness,” says Ángeles Girón, who adds that it is another plant extract, this time from comfrey, a species of perennial plant belonging to the Symphytum genus of the Boraginaceae family, which has powerful healing and soothing properties and has been used for a long time to treat small lesions and swellings of the skin. This compound can also be extracted from beetroot or chamomile.
- 6.- These cosmetic specialists emphasize the use of vitamin C serums. “This is something we all have at hand since it is found in many foods and supplements,” says Girón, who also indicates that it is important to use a silky serum, capable of enhancing the action of collagen and its antioxidant properties.
To conclude these tips, Girón says: “To keep the oval of your eyes well cared for, you should use specific cosmetics, especially those containing lanolin and Vaseline, and finally, I would stress the need to drink plenty of water, leaving aside alcohol and salt.”
Of course, in the end, if the problem cannot be resolved with the measures indicated above, eye bags can be removed by resorting to eyelid surgery, technically known as blepharoplasty, a procedure in which fat and excess skin and muscle are removed from the upper and lower eyelids.
This is a simple surgery with a standard intervention time of between one and three hours, which is performed in the operating room and, according to experts, usually with local anesthesia.
